Impresario, attore e autore drammatico statunitense; dal 1882 fu a New York impresario del Madison Square Theatre e poi del Lyceum Theatre, dal 1907 del Stuyvesant Theatre, che nel 1910 prese il suo nome. Tra le sue molte opere drammatiche (più di 370) sono note (perché poi riprese nei libretti musicati da G. Puccini) Madame Butterfly (1900) e The girl of the golden west (1905).
